Neuropsychology is about the relationship of the brain with behavior. Neuropsychologists assess cognitive and behavioral changes caused due to an injury, accident or changes originating in the central nervous system.
Since the brain is at the seat of thought, behavior and emotion, any injury to it leads to damage to its existing role. On the other hand, if there’s a neurologic or psychiatric or mental illness, this could cause some mental damage.
Neuropsychology is the science that addresses these symptoms that arise in one whose brain is damaged. This assessment is made using specific assessment tools and it is performed with cognitive retraining and redressal of the damaged functions.
A neuropsychological assessment is a comprehensive and an objective test of a wide spectrum of behavioral and cognitive areas of the brain’s functioning. A series of assessments can show how the brain’s functions have either improved or further deteriorated. Based on the results, attempts to modify the treatment may be made. Neuropsychologists devise a special treatment plan based on the individual’s strengths and damage observed during the test. This test is conducted using the interview and observation modes and with psychological testing.
The assessment covers the following:
A knowledge of the cerebral functions can be a practical basis of designing rehab programs for patients with brain injuries. To give the patient the best and most focused treatment, RHS’ neuropsychology center works closely with other departments, such as:
