Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder first diagnosed in one’s childhood. An individual can continue to suffer from it even in adulthood.

This disorder makes focusing one’s attention and controlling one’s impulsive behavior extremely difficult. People diagnosed with this condition are known for their restlessness, hyperactivity, and inattention. If left untreated, these problems can continue right through adulthood.

Causes of ADHD

Though medical research cannot still pinpoint the specific cause of ADHD, still it has been found that ADHD is perhaps due to a blend of environmental factors and genetics. These include:

Experts believe that the neurotransmitter Dopamine is a cause of ADHD. Low levels of this neurotransmitter are linked with ADHD.

Those parts of the brain associated with attention control and activity level are linked with ADHD.

It has been found that ADHD is a genetic problem. There’s a 1:4 chance that a parent with ADHD will have a child also suffering from the same problem. A sibling might also suffer from ADHD.

Brain damage and severe head injuries can also cause ADHD.

Pregnant women who were into drug abuse and smoking increase the chances of their children developing ADHD.

Rarely, environmental toxins cause ADHD.

Premature or low-term births and lead exposure cause ADHD too.

Types of ADHD

The top types of ADHD include:

Combined Type :
The commonest type of ADHD, the patient shows symptoms of hyperactivity, impulsiveness, easy distractibility, and lack of attention.

Inattentive and Distractible Type :
Here, the obvious symptoms displayed are easy distractibility and lack of attention. However, the individual does not display any hyperactivity.

Impulsive/Hyperactive Type :
ADHD patients of this type are impulsive and hyperactive but aren’t distracted nor inattentive.

Treatment

...

With the help of therapy or medication or a combination of the two, ADHD can be managed effectively. Psychotherapy can teach children how to handle their feelings and grow their self-esteem.

With medications, children can manage their hyperactivity and impulsiveness and grow their attention span.
