SPRAVATO® (esketamine)
Spravato (Esketamine) is an FDA approved prescription medicine in the form of a nasal spray
used in conjunction with an oral antidepressant for the treatment of depression. It is
considered a safe and effective treatment of choice for adults suffering with treatment-
resistant depression. Spravato treatment might be immensely helpful to those patients with
major depressive disorder (MDD) symptoms that refuse to get better even after medication.
Procedure
The administration of Spravato is fairly simple. You will be taking the Spravato nasal spray
yourself, but in a healthcare setting under the supervision of your healthcare provider. They
will tell you the dose and show you how to administer it. After administering the medicine,
the patient will have to stay for at least 2 hours for monitoring during which the healthcare
provider will assess your blood pressure and check for any other indications of side effects.
Due to the patient’s inability to drive or operate any machinery for the rest of the day after
Spravato treatment, the patient must bring a companion for each treatment session.
Side Effects
Spravato treatment may have side effects including but not limited to:
Dissociation (a sense of not being connected or distortion of time, space and illusions),
dizziness, nausea, sedation, vertigo, numbness, anxiety, metallic taste in the mouth,
headache, lethargy, increased blood pressure, vomiting and bladder problems.
