Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) is an enzyme that processes amino acids, the basis of proteins, and folate. Homocysteine, the amino acid that MTHFR breaks down, maintains the cells of the human body.
Folate is a B-vitamin that makes red and white blood cells in the human bone marrow. It also produces RNA and DNA and converts carbs into energy.
A mutation is a part of a gene’s DNA that varies from individual to individual. Everyone can have one or the other mutation or neither, on the MTHFR gene. With just one variant, you’re less likely to have health problems. However, with two mutations, you could have serious health issues.
The two variants of MTHFR are:
C677T: This variant is commonly seen in about 30%-40% of the US population, generally among Hispanics and people of Caucasian descent.
A1298C People who have this variant will not have huge health problems.
Medical conditions associated with MTHFR are:
If you are diagnosed with an MTHFR variant, you need to take a course of Vitamin B supplements. If you need treatment, it generally means that your homocysteine levels are high. The causes of high homocysteine are:
Preventive measures that one can take to lower homocysteine levels include:
